State Theatre

History
The State Theatre opened in 1984 as part of Arts Centre Melbourne’s integrated performing-arts complex. Fiddler on the Roof, presented by Opera Australia, inaugurated the venue in May. That August, the Victoria State Opera mounted John Copley’s production of Verdi’s Don Carlos.
Opera Australia and The Australian Ballet established it as their principal Melbourne venue. The Production Company later used the theatre for musical-theatre seasons before its eventual closure.
