The stadium takes its name from Aimé Giral, an early fly-half for the club. He died during the First World War. He was not alone. Seven USA Perpignan players lost their lives in that conflict, and the naming of the ground stands as a quiet memorial to them. For a period the stadium also served rugby league. Catalans Dragons played most of their home matches here during their first two seasons in the Super League, in 2006 and 2007, before moving permanently to their own renovated ground, Stade Gilbert Brutus. Between then and 2008 the stadium itself grew, its capacity expanded from 13,500 to 14,593 seats.
