History
The Carlisle Church Extension Society organised a design competition in 1873 for “mountain chapels”—rural places of worship suited to the Lake District landscape. The Lancaster architectural partnership of Paley and Austin won this contest and designed St Peter’s as their response to the brief. The church has since served as an active parish church, latterly within the Leven Valley benefice alongside St Anne Haverthwaite and St Mary Staveley-in-Cartmel.
