History
Constructed over three and a half years, St. Paul’s Church was completed in November 1901 under the direction of architects Karl Moser (1860–1936) and Robert Curjel. The church functioned as a Reformed place of worship for over a century. In 2019, following shifting religious practice in Basel, the church was secularised and underwent conversion into a cultural venue. It reopened in July 2021 as “Kulturkirche Paulus”—a cultural church—expanding its mission to embrace concerts, choral performances, weddings, and community events.
What you see
The building exemplifies Neo-Romanesque design. Its most striking liturgical feature is the raised stone pulpit positioned behind a stone communion table in the apse. A gallery spans the apse with a central arch, housing the organ and choir. Art Nouveau flourishes distinguish the interior and exterior: sculptor Carl Burckhardt (1878–1923) created relief panels above the main entrance; Heinrich Altherr (1878–1947) designed interior mosaics on the front wall; and stained glass windows by Max Laeuger (1864–1952) illuminate the space with colour and symbolic imagery.
