History
The church was established in 1850 by Sidney Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Lea, brother of the Earl of Pembroke. Originally founded as a chapel-of-ease within the parish of Donnybrook, it has evolved into a trustee and non-parochial church within the Church of Ireland’s Diocese of Dublin and Glendalough.
St. John’s became the home of the Community of St. John the Evangelist, a landmark institution as the first Anglican order of nuns in Ireland.
