History
The original church was completed in 1892. For decades it remained a parish church until 1953, when the Catholic Diocese of Stockholm was established and the building elevated to cathedral status. This elevation reflected a dramatic shift in Swedish religious demography. After World War II, immigration substantially increased the Catholic population in Stockholm and throughout Sweden, rendering the existing structure inadequate for its growing congregation.
In response, architects Hans Westman and Ylva Lenormand designed a major extension. The new wing was inaugurated in 1983, marking the 200th anniversary of the Catholic Church’s re-establishment in Lutheran Sweden in 1783.
