History
The church was erected in 1892 to designs by Douglas and Fordham, a Chester-based architectural practice. Originally conceived with a chancel and northeast steeple, the building was completed without these elements. A chancel was finally added in 1935–36, designed by J. H. Swainson, fulfilling the architects’ original vision nearly half a century later. In recent Church in Wales restructuring, St David’s became part of the Offa Mission Area under Vision 2020 reorganisation. In June 2024, a planning application proposed demolition and replacement with a graveled car park and cabin.
What you see
The church comprises a nave and north aisle built in warm Ruabon brick with ashlar sandstone dressings. The west window displays Perpendicular Gothic styling, while the south porch features timber framing in its gable end. The 1935–36 chancel extension maintains architectural continuity with the original structure.
Cultural significance
St David’s represents a snapshot of Methodist Wales at its industrial zenith. The choice of Ruabon brick—quarried locally and exported globally—anchors the building to its industrial community. As a Welsh-language chapel, it embodies the linguistic and religious culture of the valleys during the nineteenth century.
