History
Construction began in 1930, with the foundation stone laid on 28 September by Sir Alfred Herbert, a prominent local industrialist. The church was consecrated on 26 September 1931, marking swift progress from inception to sacred use. Financial limitations, however, meant the building would remain unfinished. Sir Alfred donated £975 specifically to commission a Lady Chapel in memory of his second wife, Florence, who died in 1930.

Henry Paley of Austin and Paley designed the church in the modern ecclesiastical idiom of the 1930s. Herbert Jackson, a local architect, served as clerk of works and consulting architect during construction. The completed sections show the designers’ intent, though the missing western 2½ bays, two porches, baptistry and bell turret—casualties of underfunding—represent an architectural ambition that was never realised. The Lady Chapel survives as a memorial to Florence Herbert.

The church exemplifies the interwar expansion of suburban Anglican provision in industrial England. Austin and Paley were among Britain’s foremost ecclesiastical architects of the period, and their work at Earlsdon demonstrates their commitment to modern parish church design.
