Sibley and Holmwood Candy Factory and Witkop and Holmes Headquarters

Two connected brick commercial blocks on Swan Street, built for candy-making and a wholesale grocer, now converted to loft apartments.

At a glance

Also known as the Weed & Company Building, the property comprises two historic structures at 145–149 Swan Street in downtown Buffalo. The five-story candy factory dates to 1896. The four-story headquarters building followed in 1901.

History

The Sibley & Holmwood Candy Factory went up in 1896 at 149 Swan Street. Five years later, the Witkop & Holmes Headquarters rose next door at 145 Swan Street. The architectural firm Bethune, Bethune & Fuchs designed the later building.

Both buildings have since been renovated to house loft apartments.

What you see

The candy factory is a five-story, nine-bay-wide brick commercial block with late-Gothic detailing. Gothic window arches, decorative cast-iron columns on the storefront, and a corbelled cornice mark its facade.

The Witkop & Holmes Headquarters is smaller: a four-story, three-bay-wide brick commercial block. Both buildings have flat roofs.

Cultural significance

The connected buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.
