History
A village settlement near the fortress dates to the early Iron Age, suggesting continuous habitation in this strategic location. By the 5th century BC, the Thracians claimed the site as their own.
The Romans transformed it into a military stronghold between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD, constructing the towers and walls that would define the fortress for centuries. The Byzantines later renovated the fortifications, establishing it as a garrison town.
During the Middle Ages, Shumen thrived as a vital stronghold of the Bulgarian Empire. This period represented the fortress’s apex as a seat of power and defence. The Ottoman conquest in 1444, following their victory at the Battle of Varna against Christian forces led by Władysław III of Poland, brought its active military use to an end. The fortress was abandoned and remained deserted thereafter.
