Seventh Fort

A masterwork of Russian military engineering, this brick fortress in Kaunas exemplifies the defensive architecture of the Kaunas Fortress complex, preserving the design principles of 19th-century fortification strategy.

At a glance

The Seventh Fort is one of the best surviving examples of a two-rampart fort, constructed in the Žaliakalnis district during the first phase of Kaunas Fortress development. Its authentic brick structure and well-preserved details make it a significant testament to Russian military architecture.

History

Built as part of the Kaunas Fortress defensive system, the fort was initially commanded by the 11th company of Kaunas Fortress Artillery under Russian imperial control. In 1915, German forces occupied the structure without resistance during World War I. The Fort became the last brick fortification added to the Kaunas Fortress complex.

What you see

The fort displays the typical design of a 19th-century Russian brick fortress, with a distinctive two-rampart configuration. Visitors encounter numerous authentic elements including original iron window frames and remnants of the ammunition warehouse gate. Interior restoration work revealed well-preserved details: period paving, decorative finishes, and the fitted hardware of ammunition storage doors—evidence of meticulous 19th-century craftsmanship.

Cultural significance

The Seventh Fort represents a crucial phase in Kaunas’s military history and the broader story of Russian fortification engineering in the Baltic region. Its survival and careful restoration preserve knowledge of imperial-era defensive construction techniques and the lived experience of fortress garrison life.
