History
Tradition holds that the apostle Peter preached in this area, but the village’s documented origins trace to the Middle Ages, when inhabitants of nearby Palestrina relocated to these elevated, more defensible heights. The castle witnessed combat during the Battle of Palestrina in 1848, when forces of the Roman Republic under Giuseppe Garibaldi clashed with soldiers of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The struggle left its mark on the landscape and local memory alike.

Cultural significance
In November 2017, Castel San Pietro Romano joined the prestigious network of the “Most Beautiful Villages of Italy,” recognition reflecting both architectural integrity and landscape value. The same year brought the “100 Goals of Italy” designation and the municipality’s “Riciclone del Lazio” award for environmental excellence. In 2018, the village honoured actress Gina Lollobrigida as its first honorary citizen.
