A minor basilica in Oviedo designed by architect Luis Bellido and completed in 1915, San Juan el Real stands on a site consecrated to Saint John the Baptist since the 9th century. The church gained renewed prominence when Francisco Franco married here in 1923.

History
The site’s religious history extends to 862, when Alfonso III the Great established an altar dedicated to San Juan Bautista adjacent to his palace. Alfonso VI later donated the site in 1006, and a hospital for the poor was subsequently established there, attracting pilgrims across centuries.
The present church building was constructed on this hallowed ground after the previous structure was demolished in 1882. Foundation work began in 1912 under architect Luis Bellido’s design and was completed in 1915. The building gained notoriety in 1923 when Francisco Franco married within its walls.
In November 2014, as the modern church approached its centennial, Pope Francis elevated San Juan el Real from parish church status to a minor basilica, formally recognizing its historical importance.
