History
The ancient colony Anchialos, founded around the 5th century BC as part of Apollonia in Thrace, likely originated in connection with sea-salt extraction. The tradition may trace back further to the nearby Solnitsata. During the Middle Ages, Pomorie’s salt pans became a major economic engine, supplying Constantinople and the wider Byzantine Empire; Thessaloniki served as an alternative production center. In the 16th century, the Ottoman concessionaire Michael Kantakouzenos Şeytanoğlu—known by his nickname “son of Satan”—held the title of Archon of Constantinople under Suleiman the Magnificent and was a cousin of Ivan the Terrible, Russia’s first tsar. Rock-salt extraction elsewhere did not begin until the Middle Ages, at Salina Turda.
