History
Construction began in 1914 and proceeded until 1917, when funds exhausted. For thirty-nine years the cathedral stood incomplete, its lower half alone finished. Work resumed in 1956, concluding the upper half by 1957.
Pope John XXIII elevated the shrine to minor basilica status on 31 July 1959 through the decree Quasi Arx Præsidium, signed by Cardinal Domenico Tardini. The honour acknowledged the cathedral’s spiritual and architectural importance to the region.

Architect Louis-Napoleon Audet designed the building in Gothic style and oversaw both construction phases. The façade features a large window depicting the four Evangelists, a visual proclamation of Christian doctrine at the cathedral’s entrance.
The interior glows with 105 stained-glass windows created by Parisian craftsman Rafaël Lardeur, transforming natural light into colour throughout the sanctuary. The archbishop’s chapel walls were painted by Ozias Leduc, the renowned Québécois muralist whose work graced numerous religious and public buildings across Canada.

The cathedral embodies the persistence of Catholic institutional life in Quebec through the twentieth century.
