History
The church takes its name from Bernard de Clairvaux, a 12th-century Burgundian monk who reformed the Cistercian Order. The Goutte d’Or neighbourhood itself was named “La Chapelle” after a legendary chapel, traditionally believed to have been built by Saint Geneviève in 475 over the burial place of Saint Denis, who was decapitated there around 250 A.D. This sacred geography anchored the new church within centuries of Christian tradition.
Construction began in 1858 under the urban transformation of Paris. Joseph Magne, serving as one of Baron Haussmann’s chief city planners, designed the structure during a period of systematic modernisation and embellishment of the capital.
