Overview

Rovereto is a city and comune in Trentino, in northern Italy, located in the Vallagarina valley of the Adige River. Its name means “wood of sessile oaks.” The second city of Trentino after Trento, it combines a historic centre, a hilltop castle and a strong modern identity as a city of art and culture.

History

Rovereto developed around its castle, which guarded the Adige valley. Under Venetian rule from the 15th century the town prospered as a centre of the silk trade, before passing to the Austrian Empire. During the First World War the surrounding front lines left a deep mark, commemorated afterward by the great Bell of the Fallen cast on the Miravalle hill.

What you see

The medieval Castello di Rovereto houses the Italian Historical War Museum. On the Miravalle hill stands the Maria Dolens, the monumental Bell of the Fallen, which tolls each evening in memory of the war dead. In the centre, the MART, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, is one of Italy’s leading modern art institutions.

Cultural significance

Rovereto unites a layered Venetian and Austrian past with a vibrant contemporary culture. Its war castle, the Bell of the Fallen and the MART museum make it a major centre of both historical memory and modern art in the Alpine region.

Practical information

The historic centre is freely accessible year-round; the castle, MART and Bell of the Fallen are visitor sites with their own opening hours. Check the official museum and town websites for times and events.

Getting there

Rovereto lies on the Brenner railway line between Trento and Verona, with frequent regional and intercity trains. By car it is reached via the A22 Brenner motorway and the SS12 road along the Adige valley.
