Ripon Cathedral

A cathedral with roots reaching back to the 660s, Ripon Cathedral evolved from an Irish monastic foundation into one of northern England’s most significant ecclesiastical buildings, marked by a celebrated Early English west front and a rare seventh-century crypt.

At a glance

This Grade I listed cathedral has stood at the heart of Ripon’s spiritual life for over thirteen centuries. Originally a monastery of the Irish tradition, it was refounded by St Wilfrid in 672 and later became a collegiate church. Today it serves as one of three co-equal cathedrals of the Bishop of Leeds.

History

Ripon’s ecclesiastical story begins in the 660s with monks of the Irish tradition establishing a monastery on the site. St Wilfrid’s refoundation in 672 marked a turning point, introducing Benedictine monastic discipline and establishing the community’s enduring spiritual character. By the tenth century, the church had become collegiate, serving as a mother church within the expansive Diocese of York throughout the medieval period. In 1836, over a thousand years after its foundation, Ripon was elevated to cathedral status. A more recent transformation came in 2014, when the Diocese of Ripon was incorporated into the new Diocese of Leeds, transforming Ripon Cathedral into one of three co-equal cathedrals under a single bishop.

What you see

The present cathedral is the fourth structure to occupy the site, built gradually between the 13th and 16th centuries. Its most celebrated feature is the gothic west front in the Early English style, widely regarded as one of the finest examples of this architectural tradition in England. An equally significant element is the Geometric east window. Beneath the later structure lies the seventh-century crypt from Wilfrid’s original church—a remarkable survival and one of England’s most important examples of early Christian architecture.

Cultural significance

Ripon Cathedral embodies the continuity of Christian worship across fourteen centuries of English history. The preservation of Wilfrid’s crypt provides rare archaeological and architectural evidence of seventh-century religious building in Britain. The cathedral’s architectural excellence, particularly its west front, established standards for English gothic design that influenced ecclesiastical building for centuries.
