Founded in 1964 following the death of India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, the institution originally aimed to preserve and reconstruct the history of the Indian independence movement. Originally named the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML), it operated under the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society. In April 2022, the Modi government renamed and expanded the institution to the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library, broadening its scope to encompass all prime ministers of India.
