History
Founded in 1946 by Stanisław Proń, legal counsel and administrative director of the Regional Chamber of Pharmacists in Kraków, the museum originally occupied a building at ul. Basztowa until the late 1980s. It was relocated to its current home on ul. St. Florian’s following a comprehensive renovation, where it has remained ever since.
What you see
The museum’s layout mirrors historical apothecary design, with each floor dedicated to distinct themes. The first floor honors Ignacy Łukasiewicz, a pharmacist and pioneer in crude oil who invented the modern kerosene lamp. The second floor examines Tadeusz Pankiewicz, a Roman Catholic pharmacist who courageously ran the “Under the Eagle” pharmacy in the Kraków Ghetto during Nazi occupation.
Artifacts include precision weights patented by Marian Zahradnik—some weighing less than one gram—whose elegant designs were adopted across the Austro-Hungarian Empire and beyond, remaining in use with minor modifications. An electrical device designed to sterilize prescriptions speaks to pharmacists’ early concerns about germ transmission.
Cultural significance
The museum documents pharmacy’s evolution from medieval craft to modern science. Its tributes to Łukasiewicz and Pankiewicz celebrate Polish pharmaceutical innovation and moral courage.
