From its earliest centuries, San Marco earned the epithet “the Golden Church”—a reputation rooted in its legendary treasure, resplendent mosaics, and commanding design that proclaimed the Serenissima’s power and wealth to the world. Until Venice’s republican collapse, the basilica served as the palatine church of the Doge’s Palace, administered by a territorial prelature under the doge’s primicerio. In 1807, it assumed the cathedral title, transferred from the ancient church of San Pietro di Castello, though that earlier seat retained official standing.

Getting there
