A columned exhibition palace built to give the new capital of Italy a stage grand enough for its art.

The Palazzo delle Esposizioni rises from Via Nazionale behind a portico of Corinthian columns, a neoclassical facade designed for one purpose: to show art on a civic scale. It has done so, on and off, for more than a century, and remains one of Rome’s largest exhibition halls.
History
After Rome became the capital of a united Italy in 1871, the city laid out Via Nazionale as a modern thoroughfare and needed a public gallery to match. The Palazzo delle Esposizioni was built between 1877 and 1883 to a design by Pio Piacentini, and opened as a venue for the great national and international art shows of the young kingdom.
What you see
The facade is organised around a triumphal-arch portico flanked by allegorical statues and, above, sculptural groups that announce the building’s purpose. It is deliberately theatrical — a palace of display rather than of residence — and the deep portico gives the entrance the feel of a stage set into the street.
Significance
The palace has hosted exhibitions across every field, from painting and sculpture to photography, cinema and design, and has been remodelled inside more than once to keep pace. It stands as a monument to a young state’s belief that a capital needed a place to gather and show what it made.

Getting there
The palace is on Via Nazionale, a straight walk down from Piazza della Repubblica (Metro Repubblica, Line A) or up from Piazza Venezia. Many bus routes run along Via Nazionale.
