Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral
A neo-Romanesque cathedral in Hungary’s historic center, rebuilt in just one year to serve as the seat of the diocese of Kaposvár.
At a glance
One of Hungary’s largest Christian churches, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption dominates the heart of Kaposvár. Its current neo-Romanesque form dates to 1886, though a Baroque predecessor stood on the site over a century earlier.
History
A Baroque church was first erected between 1737 and 1744. By the 1880s, the diocese required a larger structure. Construction of the new neo-Romanesque cathedral began in 1885 and concluded the following year—a remarkably swift completion.
The twentieth century brought successive improvements. In 1937, a commemorative image was installed on the porch depicting the pastor, residents, and mayor professing Catholic faith and Marian devotion. A new organ was added in 1958, followed by extensive interior renovation in 1969. Liturgical modifications were made in 1977 to enhance the functioning of religious ceremonies. A memorial plaque of red marble honoring the cathedral’s priests was affixed to the western wall in 2003.
What you see
The cathedral displays neo-Romanesque architecture completed in 1886. Its interior underwent comprehensive renovation in 1969 and underwent liturgical modifications in 1977 to accommodate modern ecclesiastical practice. A 1958 organ occupies a place of importance within the sacred space.
Cultural significance
As the seat of the diocese of Kaposvár and one of Hungary’s largest Christian churches, the cathedral serves as a major religious and architectural landmark. Its rapid reconstruction in the 1880s reflects the confidence and resources of the Catholic Church during that era.
