The Osage City station is a brick railroad depot on Market Street, built in 1912 as a junction point on the Santa Fe Railway’s main line. Today it serves as a museum and cultural landmark, preserved by the Osage County Historical Society.
History
Construction began in September 1911 and the station opened to passengers in spring 1912, at a cost of $13,000. For nearly six decades it facilitated intercity travel and freight operations through the region.
Passenger service declined sharply in the early 1970s. Amtrak assumed most intercity rail routes on May 1, 1971, and the depot ceased active passenger operations between 1970 and that date. The Southwest Chief now passes the station without stopping.
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway sold the building to the Osage County Historical Society in 1986, transforming it into a community museum. The station was recognized nationally when added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 11, 1989.
