History
Designed and constructed in 1905 by the Viennese architectural firm Fellner & Helmer, the theatre opened during the Austro-Hungarian period. In 1940, the theatre established its first professional ensemble. Seven years later, in 1954, it was renamed to honour Olha Kobylianska, the Ukrainian writer and playwright whose works shaped modern Ukrainian drama. A new workshop and chamber stage opened in 2023, housed in a restored historic electrical substation on Lesi Ukrainky Street, extending the venue’s creative capacity.
