History
The building itself dates to 1911, when it first opened as home to the Romanian National Theatre’s Comedy section. As an institutional lineage, however, the theatre traces its roots to the Teatrul Muncitoresc CFR Giulești, established in 1946. That workers’ theatre company occupied the space until 1974, when it relocated to its present site in the Sala Majestic.
The theatre’s transformation reflected Romania’s political upheaval. In 1990, following the Romanian Revolution of 1989, the institution shed its Soviet-era name and adopted the name Odeon. Three years later, it earned the Romanian Theatre of the Year Award, affirming its cultural stature in the post-communist era.
