Nonnebakken

Nonnebakken—literally “The Nun Hill”—is a circular earthwork fortress in Odense, Denmark, constructed between 980 and 1000. One of only six such Viking ring castles in Denmark, it controlled river traffic and served the House of Knýtlinga during a turbulent period of dynastic power.
History
The castle was built under Sweyn Forkbeard, who forced his father Harold Bluetooth from Denmark around 975, driving him to seek refuge with the Jomsvikings on Wollin in what is now Poland. The fort’s strategic location on the Odense River made it essential to controlling the region.
Later, a Benedictine nunnery occupied the site—the source of its name. At the end of the 12th century, the nuns relocated southeast to build a new church at Dalum, now a suburb of Odense. The fortress ramparts were documented in Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg’s monumental atlas Civitates Orbis Terrarum (1598), appearing in a panorama of Odense engraved in 1593 based on sketches by Heinrich Rantzau.
The 19th century brought destruction when an Odd Fellow lodge was constructed on the site. Twentieth-century excavations by Fyns Stiftsmuseum restored scholarly understanding of the fortress’s dimensions and construction date.
What you see
The remains consist of earthwork ramparts forming a circle with an inner diameter of 120 metres. These embankments, now partially obscured by later development and the passage of centuries, once formed an imposing defensive structure typical of Scandinavian military architecture of the period.
Cultural significance
Nonnebakken exemplifies the military engineering and political ambitions of Denmark’s Jelling dynasty. In 2023, along with four other Viking ring castles, it received UNESCO World Heritage inscription in recognition of its unique circular architecture and its role in demonstrating the strategic power of medieval Scandinavian rulers.
