Located on Libertador Avenue in the Núñez neighbourhood, ESMA began as a naval education facility. It became the largest clandestine detention and torture center of the military dictatorship—and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site dedicated to bearing witness.
History
The complex originally served as the Higher School of Mechanics of the Navy (Escuela Superior de Mecánica de la Armada). During the military dictatorship from 1976 to 1983, it operated as Task Unit 3.3.2, a secret detention center where hundreds were tortured and killed. The regime also took babies born to imprisoned mothers, suppressed their identities, and placed them in illegal adoptions with military families.
In 2001, the Navy relocated its educational mission to Puerto Belgrano Naval Base near Bahía Blanca. On 5 August 2004, the National Congress converted the site into a memorial museum: the Space for Memory and for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights (Espacio para la Memoria). The Museo Malvinas, documenting the disputed Falkland Islands, opened on the campus in 2014. UNESCO designated ESMA as a World Heritage Site in 2023.
What you see
The original building complex remains largely preserved, allowing visitors to move through spaces where detainees were held and interrogated. The site combines institutional architecture with exhibitions that document testimonies and historical records of the dictatorship era.

ESMA stands as one of Argentina’s most important sites of conscience. It represents both a dark chapter of state violence and a commitment to memory, justice, and human rights education.
