History

The renovation project involved converting gallery space into classroom facilities to support artisan training and education.
Renovation work has proceeded unevenly. Early phases of construction resulted in the inadvertent destruction of one of the museum’s most celebrated works—a room of murals painted by renowned Madhubani artist Ganga Devi. The loss provoked widespread public and cultural criticism. As of 2019, renovations remained ongoing.
