Nahanni National Park Reserve

A remote wilderness in Canada’s north, where the South Nahanni River carves four dramatic canyons through the Mackenzie Mountains—each with walls towering a thousand metres high.

At a glance

Nahanni National Park Reserve protects a pristine section of the Mackenzie Mountains Natural Region in the Dehcho Region of the Northwest Territories, roughly 500 km west of Yellowknife. The park’s centrepiece is the South Nahanni River, whose Dene name, Nahʔa Dehé, means “river of the land of the Nahʔa people.” UNESCO recognises the reserve as a World Heritage Site.

History

The park bears the colloquial names “Headless Valley” and “Valley of The Headless Men,” referring to a series of unsolved historical deaths that occurred in the area. The landscape has long been significant to the Dene people, who named the river and region.

What you see

Four canyons—First, Second, Third and Fourth—dominate the landscape. Each canyon features dramatic cliff walls reaching approximately 1,000 metres (3,300 feet) in height. The South Nahanni River cuts through these formations as whitewater, creating one of North America’s most striking river gorges.

Cultural significance

The reserve represents a landscape integral to Dene heritage and geography. Its UNESCO World Heritage designation recognises the park’s exceptional natural values and its importance as a pristine northern wilderness.
