Nagoya Station is a terminus for multiple rail operators in Nakamura-ku, Nagoya. The JR Central-operated station formerly held the world record for the largest train station by floor area at 410,000 square metres, including the JR Central Towers built above it. History
The station opened on 1 May 1886 as a stop on an unnamed branch line extending south from the Tokyo-Osaka railway. Originally planned along the inland Nakasendō route, the line was rerouted to follow the Tōkaidō route, placing Nagoya Station on the strategically important Tōkaidō Main Line.
The station building has been reconstructed multiple times since opening, most recently in 1999. The Nagoya Municipal Subway first connected to the station in 1957, expanding regional transit capacity. The Aonami Line, which began as freight-only service, commenced passenger operations in 2006. Construction is currently underway to establish Nagoya Station as the western terminus of the first section of the Chūō Shinkansen, with two underground platforms under development.

The JR Central station comprises eight platforms: six island platforms on the eastern side and two on the western side. The Nagoya Municipal Subway operates two separate island platforms, each serving different lines. The Aonami Line station features a single island platform.
The station services the Meieki commercial district, Nagoya’s business centre. A bus terminal operated by the Nagoya City Transportation Bureau is directly connected to the station, facilitating onward travel throughout the city and region.
