History
The collection has been cultivated over nearly two centuries, documenting the natural, social and cultural records of the Australasian region. The Museums Victoria Research Institute was launched in 2022 to address contemporary challenges through interdisciplinary inquiry and multiple knowledge systems.

Museums Victoria’s natural history collections are especially vital to scientists shaping conservation strategies and researching environmental change and biodiversity. The library holds some of Australia’s rarest 18th and 19th century scientific monographs and serials. In partnership with First Peoples communities, the organisation places Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and knowledge at the centre of its practice, co-creating exhibitions spanning thousands of years and supporting the repatriation of cultural material to Country.
