History
The original Montreal Eaton Centre opened on November 14, 1990, occupying the site of the former Les Terrasses mall at 705 Saint Catherine Street West. The adjacent building at 677 Saint Catherine Street West began as the Eaton’s flagship department store—an iconic institution in Quebec retail—before becoming the Complexe Les Ailes shopping mall in 2002. In 2018, the two centres merged under a single management structure, creating one of Montreal’s most prominent retail destinations while retaining the Eaton Centre name.
What you see
The complex spans two connected buildings housing over 90,000 square metres of combined floor space. Within the mall stands a bronze statue of hockey legend Ken Dryden, a fitting tribute to Canadian sports culture. A striking three-storey-tall tableau created by fine arts enamel painter Bernard Séguin Poirier adds visual depth to the interior landscape. The upper levels house modern office spaces, while the ground and mid-levels serve retail and dining functions.
Cultural significance
The centre carries the name of Eaton’s, a department store chain that shaped Canadian retail for over a century before its closure. Only two Eaton Centres remain in Canada—this one and its Toronto counterpart. The mall functions as both a commercial hub and a gateway to Montreal’s Underground City, the climate-controlled network connecting downtown buildings and the Metro system. Its artworks, particularly the Dryden statue, reflect Montreal’s deep connection to hockey heritage.
