Mondovì Synagogue

The Mondovì Synagogue is a historic Jewish house of worship in the upper town of Mondovì (Piazza), Piedmont, preserving one of the most intact interiors of any synagogue in the Cuneese area. Established by a Jewish community that settled in Mondovì under Savoyard licence, the synagogue retains its eighteenth-century wooden fixtures, decorated ceiling, and traditional liturgical furniture, making it a rare and moving example of Piedmontese Jewish heritage.

Overview

The Mondovì Synagogue is one of several historic synagogues scattered across the towns of Piedmont that together constitute a distinctive regional Jewish heritage. Hidden within the dense urban fabric of Mondovì Piazza, the upper hilltop quarter of the town, the synagogue is a discreet building whose modest exterior conceals an interior of considerable artistic and historical value. It is managed by the Union of Italian Jewish Communities (UCEI) as part of the wider Piedmontese Jewish itinerary.

History

Jews settled in Mondovì during the sixteenth century under the tolerant policy of the Duchy of Savoy, which permitted Jewish communities in many Piedmontese towns in exchange for moneylending services and commercial activity. The community constructed and later redecorated its synagogue over the following two centuries, producing the handsome Baroque interior that survives today. Like other Piedmontese Jewish communities, the Mondovì congregation suffered severe losses during the Nazi-Fascist deportations of 1943–1945, after which active religious use declined, though the building was preserved and restored as a heritage site.

What you see

The synagogue interior is compact and intimate, with a decorated wooden ceiling, carved pews, and a finely worked Aron ha-Kodesh (the ark containing the Torah scrolls) set against the eastern wall. The bimah occupies the traditional central position. Textile furnishings, silver ceremonial objects, and illuminated manuscripts associated with the community are preserved on-site or in trust with regional museums. The building offers a rare, largely intact glimpse of daily Jewish religious life in a small Piedmontese town before emancipation.

Cultural significance

Together with the synagogues of Cuneo, Saluzzo, Cherasco, and Carmagnola, the Mondovì Synagogue forms part of the Piedmontese Jewish Heritage Route, which traces the history of one of the oldest and most culturally rich Jewish communities in Italy. The route is recognised by regional and national cultural authorities as a significant itinerary for memory, identity, and intercultural dialogue. The Mondovì site is notable for the quality of its preserved decorative interior, which survived the twentieth century substantially intact.
