Meolo
Meolo is a small agricultural town on the Veneto plain in the Metropolitan City of Venice, northern Italy. It sits just south of the SR89 regional road in a landscape shaped by centuries of land reclamation and river management between the Piave and the Sile. Overview
Meolo belongs to the flat lowland territory between Venice and Treviso, a zone that was extensively reclaimed and settled during the period of Venetian Republic rule (13th–18th centuries). The town lies approximately 30 kilometres north-east of Venice and 20 kilometres south-east of Treviso. Its economy has historically been rooted in agriculture, particularly viticulture and cereal cultivation, taking advantage of the fertile alluvial soils of the Piave plain.
History
The area around Meolo was inhabited in Roman times, as attested by scattered finds along the ancient road network connecting Altino to Aquileia. During the medieval period the territory fell under Venetian jurisdiction, and the Republic invested in land drainage and water management works that defined the agricultural character of the plain. After the fall of the Republic in 1797 and subsequent Napoleonic and Habsburg administration, Meolo was incorporated into the unified Italian state in 1866 as part of the Third Italian War of Independence.
