Malacca Sultanate Palace Museum
A faithful modern reconstruction of a 15th-century sultanate palace, built from traditional materials and opened to the public in 1986, now houses over 1,350 artifacts and ceremonial objects from Malacca’s royal heritage.

This three-storey museum stands at the foot of St. Paul’s Hill in central Malacca. Its design draws exclusively on the Malay Annals, the historical chronicle that documented sultanate life. The building employs hardwood for its structure, belian wood for the roof, and wooden pegs rather than nails—a deliberate return to pre-colonial construction methods.
History
Construction began in October 1984, with the museum completed and officially opened by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on 17 July 1986. The project cost MYR 3.09 million. On 15 April 1989, the museum became the focal point for a historic declaration: Malacca Town was formally recognized as a historic city. A monument crowned with a golden tengkolok (royal headgear) and semicircular tile art were installed at the entrance to commemorate the occasion.

The palace is organized across three floors within eight chambers and three galleries. The first floor features the throne room, centerpiece of sultanate ceremony and authority. The second floor contains the Sultan’s private quarters, including sleeping chambers. The third floor displays the sultan’s personal collection—weapons, regalia, ceremonial clothing, and paintings. Dioramas depicting key historical moments and period figures bring the sultanate era to life throughout the galleries.
