A reconstructed Seto fortress-farm in southeastern Estonia, now operating as an affiliate of Obinitsa Museum and planned experience farm.

The farm has been reconstructed and now serves as an extension of Obinitsa Museum, located 4 kilometres from Obinitsa village. Its enclosed yard, high gates, and protective fences reflect the practical architecture of historical Seto settlements.
History
The farm represents a traditional Seto building type developed for protection and self-sufficiency in the borderland region of southeastern Estonia. Originally drawing water from the nearby Tuhkvitsa Creek, the farm was later reconstructed to preserve and interpret this significant vernacular heritage. It now functions as part of Obinitsa Museum’s effort to present Seto culture and settlement patterns.

The farm exemplifies the fortress-farm design: buildings arranged around an enclosed courtyard, secured by high wooden gates and sturdy fences. This inward-facing layout provided both defence and shelter from harsh weather. Tobrova Chapel stands on the farm’s territory, adding a religious dimension to the domestic compound. The site’s proximity to Tuhkvitsa Creek reflects the importance of water access to historical settlements.

Luikjärve preserves knowledge of Seto material culture and settlement organisation. The fortress-farm design illustrates how communities in contested borderlands adapted their architecture for security and survival. Practical information & getting there
The farm is located on the road from Meremäe to Obinitsa, 6 kilometres along the route on the right side, in Tobrova village. Access is by appointment or during scheduled events held at the site. Plans are underway to develop it as an experience farm offering expanded visitor programming.
