Likava Castle
A fortress in ruins overlooking the Váh River crossing, Likava Castle guarded a vital trade route from Liptov to Poland for nearly four centuries before its destruction in 1707.

Likava Castle stands in northwestern Liptov, strategically positioned above the Váh River. First documented in 1315, it controlled a crucial crossing and the trade corridor linking the Váh Basin to Orava and beyond into Poland. Today the castle survives largely as ruins.
History
The castle was established as a defensive stronghold when construction began around the early 14th century. The powerful Hunyady family acquired the castle and invested significantly in its expansion and fortification during the latter half of the 15th century, adding a lower castle complex to the original structure.
By the second half of the 17th century, the Thököly family completed an elaborate fortification system intended to secure the entire site. These efforts proved insufficient. When František Rákoczi’s forces retreated in 1707 during the Hungarian struggles for independence, they systematically dismantled the castle, ending its military utility and leaving it in the ruined state visible today.

The ruins reflect medieval and early modern defensive architecture, with traces of the main structure and the lower castle addition from the Hunyady period. The remains reveal the layered construction spanning nearly 400 years of military engineering and renovation.
