History
The building began life as the Chamberlain Tower, an office development designed by Ian Fraser of John Roberts & Partners. Construction ran from 1974 to 1975, establishing it as one of Broad Street’s tallest structures.
In 1998, a £12.5 million conversion transformed the offices into the Chamberlain Tower Hotel, opening on 1 February 1999. The Jurys Inns hotel chain acquired it in 2001 for £42 million and renamed it Jurys Inn Birmingham. Following the Fattal Hotel Group’s 2022 rebranding initiative, the property became Leonardo Royal Hotel Birmingham on 19 December 2022 after renovation and refurbishment.

The tower exemplifies Brutalist architecture through its exposed concrete cladding and steel joist frame—a vocabulary shared with other Birmingham landmarks including the Central Library and New Street Station Signal Box.
