History
The castle was constructed in the 14th century, establishing its medieval core. The structure passed through generations of the Działyński family, becoming an important cultural repository. In 1855, Count Tytus Działyński and his son Jan Kanty Działyński commissioned a comprehensive neogothic remodeling based partly on architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s designs, fundamentally reshaping the building’s appearance.
After Jan Kanty Działyński’s death, his brother-in-law Count Władysław Zamoyski inherited the castle. The childless Zamoyski, recognizing its importance, bequeathed the castle, its art collection, and the Kórnik Arboretum to Poland shortly before his death in 1924—an act of cultural preservation that secured the site’s future.
