History
The project began in 1890 with early concepts for a Haus für Musikfeste—a House for Music Festivals intended to reach audiences beyond the Vienna Musikverein’s traditional sphere. Ludwig Baumann’s initial vision was expansive: the Olympion proposal included not only a concert venue but also an ice-skating rink and bicycle club, with an open-air area capable of hosting 40,000 spectators. Though those ambitious plans were rejected, an ice rink was eventually built adjacent to the site.
Construction proceeded between 1911 and 1913 under architects Fellner & Helmer, working in collaboration with Baumann. The building opened as a fully realized concert hall.
