Kodansha Noma Memorial Museum
A repository of modern Japanese art and publishing heritage, housed in the former residence of a publishing dynasty in central Tokyo.
At a glance
Located in Bunkyo ward, this museum preserves the legacy of Kodansha Publishing Company through two major collections: the Noma Japanese Art Collection assembled in the early 20th century, and the Publication Culture Collection spanning the Meiji to Heisei eras. The museum is currently closed for renovations.
History
The museum opened in April 2000 to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Japan’s largest publishing company, Kodansha. It occupies the residence of Sawako Noma, former Kodansha president and granddaughter of founder Seiji Noma, whose discerning eye shaped the museum’s core holdings.
What you see
The Noma Japanese Art Collection features works by master painters Kawai Gyokudō, Uemura Shōen, Kiyokata Kaburagi, and Yokoyama Taikan, representing trends in modern Japanese art. The collection encompasses painting, sculpture, and ceramics, alongside 6,000 decorated shikishi (traditional Japanese paper or silk sheets) received directly from artists. The Publication Culture Collection displays valuable cultural materials acquired from the Meiji period onward, documenting Japan’s publishing evolution.
Cultural significance
The museum documents the intersection of art patronage and publishing culture in modern Japan. Seiji Noma’s acquisitions reflect the aesthetic priorities of the early 20th century, while the publication collection illuminates how Japanese cultural output evolved through industrialization and social change.
