History
Bohdan Khanenko, a distinguished collector and philanthropist of the late 19th and early 20th century, bequeathed his collection to Ukraine upon his death in 1917. His widow Varvara formalized the gift through a deed signed with the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in 1918. The museum officially opened in 1919, transforming private passion into public treasure. The Khanenkos’ mansion became the primary exhibition space; a second building—formerly owned by their close relatives, the Sakhnovskys—joined the institution in 2006 to display Asian art.

Two late 19th-century buildings of considerable historical and artistic merit comprise the museum. The Khanenkos’ mansion displays European fine and decorative arts from the 14th through 18th century, with its first floor dedicated to Ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian works. A separate chamber houses a remarkable collection of early Byzantine “Sinai” icons from the 6th and 7th centuries, displayed since 2004. The adjacent Sakhnovsky building contains four dedicated rooms exploring Buddhist and Islamic traditions alongside masterworks of China and Japan. Architectural grandeur frames the collections themselves.

The museum preserves one of Eastern Europe’s most comprehensive art collections assembled by private collectors. Works by Pieter Paul Rubens, Gentile Bellini, Juan de Zurbarán, Jacques-Louis David and François Boucher anchor the European holdings.
