History
A devastating fire swept through Kampen in 1878, destroying much of the neighbourhood. Church authorities recognised the spiritual and communal need for a dedicated place of worship in the area. A new congregation was established in 1880, holding services in temporary spaces while construction proceeded.
The church was formally consecrated on 29 November 1882, becoming a focal point of the neighbourhood’s restoration and growth during the following decades.
What you see
Architect Jacob Wilhelm Nordan designed a sturdy brick building crowned with a copper sheet–clad tower. The interior accommodates 480 seats arranged in a traditional sanctuary plan.
The altarpiece, painted by Axel Ender in 1884, depicts two women at Jesus’s empty grave on Easter morning—a contemplative scene restored in 1913. Above four interior doors, symbols of the four Gospels were executed by Enevold Thømt in the same year. Peer Lorentz Dahl created twelve large and six small stained glass windows plus two rosette windows above the front doors, flooding the interior with coloured light.
A marble Madonna sculpture by Knut Steen, installed in 1992 on the church porch, represents the most recent significant artistic addition.
