Johnie’s Broiler

A 1950s Googie-style diner in Downey, California, built by Harvey Ortner in 1958 and restored after near-total demolition in 2007.

At a glance

Johnie’s Broiler is a mid-century restaurant distinguished by its Googie architecture—a style marked by futuristic forms, sweeping lines and bold materials. Originally named Harvey’s Broiler after its founder, it operated under that name and later as Johnie’s Broiler before being reconstructed and rebranded as Bob’s Big Boy Broiler. The building’s distinctive design made it a frequent location for film and television shoots.

History

Harvey Ortner, a former partner in the Clock Broiler restaurant chain, opened Harvey’s Broiler in 1958. The restaurant was renamed Johnie’s Broiler in 1968. It closed in 2002.

From 2002 to 2006, the building housed a used car dealership. In January 2007, the then-lease-holder demolished most of the structure illegally, without obtaining proper permits. The building was reconstructed in 2009 with support from preservationists and reopened as Bob’s Big Boy Broiler, preserving the original design.

What you see

The restaurant exemplifies Googie architecture, the playful modernist style that emerged in Southern California in the 1950s. Its design features the sweeping curves, angular forms and materials characteristic of the period. Following reconstruction, the building maintains its original appearance while meeting contemporary building codes.

Cultural significance

Its Googie styling made Johnie’s Broiler attractive to filmmakers and television producers. The building became a recognizable backdrop in popular media during its operational years. The 2007 demolition and subsequent reconstruction raised questions about preservation and adaptive use in suburban California.
