Jingtang Library

Founded by overseas Chinese philanthropist Fung Ping Shan, this Guangdong library has grown from a modest 1,250 m² institution into a major regional collection of over 400,000 books.

At a glance

The Jingtang Library stands as a testament to early 20th-century Chinese philanthropy. Established in 1925, it has expanded steadily through successive donations and additions, now encompassing 6,510 m² across multiple buildings and reading spaces.

History

Fung Ping Shan founded the library in 1925 as a gift to his hometown of Jiangmen. The institution began modestly, occupying just 1,250 m² of space. His son, Fung Ping-fan, continued his father’s legacy through further donations that enabled significant expansion. In 1988, a new main building was constructed to accommodate the growing collection. By 2012, philanthropist Huo Zongjie contributed funds to establish a dedicated reading room bearing his name, reinforcing the library’s role as a living center of learning.

What you see

The library comprises multiple structures reflecting different periods of development. The original 1925 building was superseded by a modern main building erected in 1988, which houses the bulk of the collection. The Huo Zongjie Reading Room, added in 2012, provides contemporary study facilities. The cumulative architectural evolution reflects the institution’s expanding mission.

Cultural significance

The Jingtang Library exemplifies the contributions of overseas Chinese communities to cultural preservation and public education in their ancestral regions. As a repository of over 400,000 volumes, it serves scholars, students, and the general public in Guangdong province. The library’s growth through generations of donors demonstrates sustained commitment to intellectual access.
