At a glance
The Jersey Opera House stands as a cultural landmark in La Vingtaine de la Ville, Saint Helier. Administered by the States of Jersey and managed by Jersey Opera House Limited, it remains an active venue for performance and public events.
History
The original opera house was designed in 1900 by architect Adolphus Curry (1848–1910). Following its destruction, the building was reconstructed in 1922 by the architectural firm Jesty & Baker. Over the decades, extension facilities have been added to support the theatre’s operations. Recent refurbishment work has included the removal of the canopy to restore the façade to its appearance from the 1960s.
What you see
The theatre’s façade has been characterized as imposing and slightly Frenchified—a distinctive aesthetic that sets it apart architecturally. Inside, the building houses a spectacular chandelier comprising 10,200 pieces, maintained through careful cleaning approximately every five years. The renovated exterior now displays the restored 1960s styling.
