Jaganmohan Palace stands 200 metres west of the grand Mysore Palace, a striking survivor of Mysore’s architectural awakening. Built between 1856 and 1861, it ranks among the city’s oldest modern structures. Today it functions as an art museum and auditorium under the name Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery.
History
The palace was conceived as a secondary royal residence for Mysore’s ruling maharajas. When major renovations or construction work demanded relocation from the principal palace, the royal family would move to Jaganmohan. Its significance reached a peak in 1897, when the old Mysore Palace caught fire and burned. Under Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, the palace became the royal family’s primary residence during this catastrophic moment—the last time it would serve as an inhabited royal home.
