Overview
The Parco IV Novembre is still called the giardino pubblico by many people in Pordenone, because that is what it was: it was laid out about 1856 by the civic administration, using the space that opened between the centre and the Cappuccini quarter after the railway embankment was built.
History
In 1903 the garden held an important agricultural exhibition, and then regularly the animal market, moved here from Piazza della Motta, where it had been held every Wednesday since 1594.
It is likely, then, that the design took account of that main use as a cattle market: both the many entrances set radially and the concentric planting of the trees, meant to let animals be tethered and to give them shade in the summer heat.
The circular series was originally of horse chestnuts, trees that cast a heavy shade; they were cut down during the Great War and replaced with limes, which were certainly already present in the more central part of the park. Evergreens were added later — Norway spruce, cypress, yew and thuja.
What you see
The circular scheme of the garden is picked out today by bay trees clipped into neat cones and cylinders. The park also keeps a number of statues and stone capitals.
It plays an important part in the ecological continuity of the town, linking the Parco Querini, the planted area of Piazzale Marcolin and the green banks of the Noncello — the belt that runs round Pordenone and continues on the far side to the Parco Galvani and, almost without a break, towards the Parco del Castello di Torre by way of the Parco del Seminario.
