History
Founded as the Lipari Geophysical Observatory, the site spent 50 years as a dedicated centre for seismic and volcanic surveillance across the Aeolian Islands. In 2001, the International Institute of Volcanology of Catania merged into the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), bringing comprehensive modernization to the historic facility at Contrada Falcone.
UNESCO’s recognition of the Aeolian Islands as a World Heritage Site in 2000 underscored the global scientific significance of the region—a legacy rooted in the foundation of the International Institute of Volcanology in the 1960s.
